The above lines tell us that the poet, like most other children, brushed her teeth as a routine but did not do it the way she was supposed to. She had a careless attitude towards her teeth. She did not realize the importance of caring for her teeth and brushing it in a particular manner (up and down) and taking time to floss out small particles embedded between her teeth. She felt caring for her teeth was a waste of time considering the amount of time she can actually spend eating her food. She bite into candy rather than care for her teeth.

The poet visited the dentist because she started developing problems with her teeth. She had developed cavities and her teeth were decaying. They needed to be drilled, treated and then capped.
She could have avoided visiting the dentist had she changed her diet and stopped eating so many sweets that are harmful to the teeth.
She should have also taken care of her dental hygiene and brushed her teeth daily in the proper manner and removed all tiny particles of food that were embedded between her teeth.

The line "If you got a tooth, you got a friend" tells us that having good teeth is like having good friends as they help us in many ways.
Teeth help us to break up and chew our food so that we can digest it properly. Our entire body is able to function properly only when we digest our food properly. If we didn't chew our food and digest it, we would be sick. They also give us a radiant smile that can endear us to people.
However, we need to take good care of our teeth. Only then will they stay with us till our old age. Like friends, we must not take them for granted.

We can look after our teeth by eating the right types of foods. Although all children love sweets, they must be eaten in moderation especially the toffees and the sticky ones that can cause cavities and tooth decay.
We must brush our teeth daily-morning and night and if possible rinse our mouth after ever meal.
Brushing should be done in the correct way-up and down and sideways.
Use floss or the dry bristles of your toothbrush to take off bits and pieces of food stuck or embedded in the gums.
Visit the dentist regularly.

- You heard the doctor advice him about his food and dental hygiene.
- You don't want to get into a similar situation.

The poet realizes that all children are very fond of 'chewing gum' a type of sweet. She therefore deliberately misspells the word 'amalgam' and says 'amalgum' instead to add humour to the poem and make it more enjoyable.
