Triveni was a very popular writer in the Kannada language. Her style was easy to read and very convincing. Her stories usually dealt with complex psychological problems in the lives of ordinary people and were always very interesting. Although she died very young, people continue to appreciate her novels even after forty years of her death.

The author's grandmother never went to school as in her childhood days, people never considered education essential for girls. As a result, she could not read. Hence, she depended on the author, her granddaughter, to read out an episode of her favourite novel Kashi Yatre to her.

Grandmother had succeeded in accomplishing her desire to read.

The narrator's grandmother realized that she couldn't read her favourite novel without her granddaughter's help. She decided to learn the Kannada alphabet even though she was sixty-two years old. She was so determined to succeed, that she started tuition with her granddaughter. She worked hard and achieved her goal by the deadline she set for herself. On the Dassara day, she was able to confidently read the title and the publisher's name of Kashi Yatre, which was presented to her by her granddaughter.
(iii) emotional -
Once when the narrator left her village for a week and returned she found her grandmother in tears. When she questioned her grandmother about it she did not reply but that night she went to the narrator's bed and touched her forehead affectionately and told her the reason for her sadness. It was because she had never got a chance to be educated. As she spoke she was unhappy, her eyes were filled with tears and she was very emotional.

Solution 7(a)
i) The children bought a cake, chart paper and balloons.
ii) They blew balloons and hung them around the hall.
iii) They cut out chart papers, wrote quotes, drew pictures and stuck them on the wall.
iv) They greeted them, told them they had come along to make their day special and sang songs for them.

Today is the happiest day of my life. I have achieved something that I never thought I would be able to, in all my sixty two years. I have learned to read the Kannada alphabet. How? Because of the efforts of my dear granddaughter who at her little age took on the task of educating her grandmother. Today dear diary, my heart is overflowing with joy for another reason. In recognition of my hard work I have been presented with a copy of the novel 'Kashi Yatre' by my beloved teacher! What has touched me the most is not the gift but the love, concern, patience and care she has shown through this time.

Grandmother: Good. But you must also try and get marks like him… You know, Swami, your grandfather used to frighten the examiners with his answers sometimes. When he answered a question, he did it in a tenth of the time that others took to do it. And then, his answers would be so powerful that his teachers would give him two hundred marks sometimes.
Swami: Oh enough, Granny! You go on bothering about old unnecessary stories, Why don’t you listen to my stories, Won’t you listen to Rajam?
Grandmother: Yes, dear, yes.
Swami: Granny, when Rajam was a small boy, he killed a tiger.
Rajam’s father was camping in a forest. He had his son with him. Two tigers came upon them suddenly, one knocking down the father from behind. The other began chasing Rajam, who took shelter behind a bush and shot it dead with his gun.
